The East Tennessee affiliate received $500,000 of the Bezos donation. Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon and the richest person in the world, gave Feeding America $30 million in 2020, Streno said. “We ordered a tractor trailer load of turkeys six months in advance for Thanksgiving for our clients to buy at half th cost of what we spent,” she said. She noted that the regional food bank not only met their budget despite the high food demand, but also had enough to plan ahead. “There’s a compassion that people in this country have for feeding their neighbors,” she said, adding that some people donated their federal stimulus checks to Second Harvest. The regional Second Harvest is one of 200 affiliates of the Feeding America network and one of Tennessee’s five affiliates that feed food-insecure residents in all the state’s counties. “But we received more financial gifts in 2020 than we ever got in the 28 years I’ve been at Second Harvest,” she added.
